Main St, Breckenridge

Opening Day is set for November 11 2011 (11/11/11), and the resort and their guests are gearing up for one of the most anticipated seasons in history.

Following a season like never before last year, during which Breckenridge set a new record of 13.2m of snowfall over the course of the season and saw the successful openings of several new attractions at the resort, Breck is preparing to take it to an entirely new level for 2011/12.

The actual birthday will fall on Friday December 16 2011. The resort will celebrate 50 years of existence on this day, commemorating the grand opening of the resort on December 16, 1961. This date will fall in the midst of one of the resort’s signature annual events, the Winter Dew Tour, which is set to take place that same weekend with competitions on the mountain and celebrations throughout town.

Over the last 50 years, Breck has cemented its place as one of the world’s most popular ski destinations, and has often been at the forefront of change:

- the first ski resort to allow snowboarding in Colorado, in 1984
- installed the Quicksilver Super 6 in 1986, the first and only double loading chairlift, in the USA
- the highest high-speed quad chairlift in the world, the Imperial Express Superchair, topping out at 3,914m
